D. CLAYTON JAMES (1931–2004) was a history professor at Virginia Military Institute, where he held the John Biggs ’30 Cincinnati Chair in Military History. He is the author or editor of nine books, including the three-volume biographyThe Years of MacArthur, which received the Truman Book Award.
